IT MAY SURPRISE YOU TO KNOW that the Best of Augusta came to life in a tiny town in Tennessee. Or at least the seeds were sown there.


The setting was some best-forgotten year back in the early 1980s. At the time I had a car that needed major repairs. No one who knows me would describe me as mechanically inclined, but a friend of mine had a woodworking shop with plenty of tools of every kind. More importantly, he knew cars from the inside out. He told me I could use his shop and his tools and all his expertise as long as I did all the work. All I needed were the parts and his supervision, and I would return my car to the days of its youthful vigor.
